In the calculation of the wire cloth the differences among the Italian, French and English numbering must be taken into account.
- French numbering (N.P.F.): number of mesh openings in a metric inch of 27.77 mm.
- English numbering (Mesh): number of mesh openings in a linear English inch of 25.40 mm.
- Italian numbering (NIT): number of mesh openings in 50 mm linear.
“Mesh” in the wire cloth refers to 1 open area + 2 half wires.

In order to correctly identify the mesh, it is necessary to measure:
- the two diagonal lines of the mesh, or rather the long diagonal «dl» and the short diagonal «dc»;
- the feeding extent «av»;
- metal thickness «sp».
In the case of square mesh expanded metal it is necessary to determine the size of the side of the square, «L», as is shown in the following pictures.
